Visiting Plymouth & City Information

Known as Britain’s Ocean City and the gateway to the South West UK, Plymouth is a well-connected, large, easily accessed coastal city. It is the unitary authority in Devon, England and supports over 260,000 residents, serving as a key maritime, defence, and cultural hub with a rich naval history, stunning natural harbour, and ambitious plan for urban regeneration currently underway.

Arts University Plymouth is located within the heart of Plymouth, just a few blocks from the city’s main train station and with excellent public transport networks for getting here. Our Tavistock campus is situated in the city’s ‘Cultural Cluster’, which can be easily accessed by car, public transportation or an 11-minute walk (0.5 mi) or a 3-minute taxi from the train station.

The Cultural Cluster (North Hill / Tavistock Place), which includes Arts University Plymouth, University of Plymouth and The Box, Plymouth’s flagship £44 million museum, art gallery, and archive, sits adjacent to each other, serving as the city’s primary arts and education anchor. The university sits directly across from the city centre, a thriving commercial hub featuring wide, shopping promenades such as those along Armada Way, New George Street, and Old Town Street. It has recently launched a massive £30m urban transformation focused on green spaces, family areas, and sustainable public landscape design to boost local economic growth and community.

Getting Here for the Conference

Travel from the UK

Arts University Plymouth and the city of Plymouth are served by a Great Western Railway link from London Paddington and by Cross Country trains from the north, Midlands and Scotland. There are frequent daily train services from Newton Abbot, Torbay, North Cornwall and North Devon. There is a GWR sleeper train to and from Paddington if you want to leave London late and arrive in Plymouth early.

If you are travelling via car and using a satnav, the postcode PL4 8BA will lead you to Regent Street Public Car Park, just next door to our Tavistock Place campus. You can pay via contactless at pay-and-display machines or via the RingGo Plymouth Parking app (Location Code: 16857). This carpark is equipped with Pod Point EV charging outlets (7 kW capacity).

Alternatively, parking is available at the Drake Circus Shopping Centre just across the road, or the Barcode just off Bretonside. The location and entrance of this parking facility is just off Charles Street, Plymouth, PL1 1EA.

We have limited parking for disabled access at our Tavistock Place campus. Please  let us know during completion of your conference registration if you need to use disabled parking access or email Mal Bielecka, Conference Coordinator at: mbielecka@aup.ac.uk. There is also a very limited amount of on-street parking on Regent Street.

For more information about parking, visit the Plymouth City Council website at plymouth.gov.uk/parking, or plymouth.gov.uk/parkandride.

Arriving by Coach

The university is within walking distance of the coach station on Mayflower Street. National Express coach services run from/to London Victoria Station and many other UK destinations. We recommend booking service with Megabus or with Falcon via Stagecoach.

International Travel

If arriving by plane to London airports, there are underground train links (Heathrow Express and Gatwick Express) to Paddington Station, Waterloo Station and Reading Station in London where you can take the Great Western Railway service (3.5 hrs)  to the southwest and Plymouth. There are also coach services that depart from Heathrow and Gatwick airports which will bring you directly to Plymouth, although this is a longer transport journey (approximately 6 hrs). The closest regional airports are Exeter International Airport (1 hr by car/bus), Newquay Airport (1.5 hrs by car/bus) and Bristol Airport (2.5 hrs by car/bus) each with direct coach services to Plymouth.

Plymouth is well connected to Roscoff, France, and Santander, Spain, by regular car and foot passenger ferry services. The University is just over a mile away from the ferry port and can be reached.

Booking Hotel & Accommodation

Because of our city centre location, there are many hotels within walking or taxi distance of the university. We recommend the following for their proximity to campus:

For AirBnb or Vrbo stays, we suggest staying in neighbouring areas of the City Centre, Barbican, the Hoe, Mannamead, Peverell, Mutley, or Millbay.
